【Naganouchi Kagura】
Iwato-Naganouchi district consists of 68 households from Kaminaganouchi village enshrining the tutelary at Goryo Shrine, combined with 78 households from Shimonaganouchi village enshrining the tutelary at Amano Iwato Shrine Higashi Hongu.
In ancient times, the district was the center of former Iwato village. Todaka Shogen Masashige, a family member of General Tuchimochi in 15th-16th century, came to the village as the lord of the Iwato Castle. The memorial tower of his son, Todaka Shigenaga Daizen Dayu, stands in Kaminaganouchi. Goryo Shrine in Kaminaganouchi enshrines the spirits of the Tuchimochi clan as well as the Todaka clan, and Sobodake Myoujin and Sugawara Tenjin in later years.
Shimonaganouchi-Iwagami is a local road to Iwato that once flourished as a commercial district. The Kaike Jouzogura site, where the brewing industry lasted 200 years since 1736, remains here. Amanoiwato Shrine Higashi Hongu, formerly called “Ujishadaijingu,” is dedicated to Amaterasu Oomikami; its entrance path to the shrine was also a part of the old route to Iwato. Another sacred place “Hachidairyuo Sui Shrine” is also located in Naganouchi, bustling with tourists.
Naganouchi Kagura is performed by 25 performers; 12 performers from the Kaminaganouchi Kagura Preservation Association and 13 performers from the Shimonaganouchi Kagura Preservation Association. They help each other to present a night kagura at Goryo Shrine on the fourth Saturday of November as well as at Amanoiwato Shrine Higashihongu on the second Saturday of every November.
