【Shimotabaru Kagura】
Shimotabaru district consists of 60 households in Simotabaru village and 15 households in Takaiwa village, located on the Kumamoto-Miyazaki border. Shimotabaru Night Kagura is organized by 10 groups of villagers in yearly rotation, dedicated to the nearest tutelary of the community at Hirofuku Shrine, Someno-Inari Shrine, Nagareo Myoken Shrine and Haitaka-Tenjin Shrine. In particular, Hirofuku Shrine is the most central shrine in the district, housing Kagura-Denjuhi, a rare stone monument inscribed with the names of the past kagura performers.
It is said that Shimotabaru Kagura was introduced to the village in 1885 by Fukumatsu Uchikura, an apprentice in former Shimono Village who learned to perform Shimono Kagura. The textbook that outlines the synopsis, chorus and chants of the performance was later handwritten by kagura master Jihachi Korogi at the age of 82, and later put into print by the president of the Shimotabaru Kagura Preservation Association, Hiroshi Kobayashi. The textbook has since been treasured by the performers and apprentices.
Shimotabaru Night Kagura was performed at the Takaiwa Community Center in 2015, dedicated to the tutelary enshrined at Haitakatenjin Shrine in Koito village.
